Are you an undergraduate or graduate student at UBC who is passionate about community science? The Science 101 team is always seeking volunteers to help support Science 101 students during their time in the program.
The goal of the program is to provide an enjoyable post-secondary experience for the students and hopefully inspire a continued love of learning. Volunteers are an important part of the program and are given a variety of responsibilities both inside and outside the classroom. Volunteers are recruited each year in April.
What will I be doing as a volunteer?
Lectures and Field Trips
Certain lectures and field trips involve hands-on activities, such as labs and assignments. Volunteers are needed to assist the coordinators and lecturers in running the activities and the students in completing the assigned tasks. Lectures are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:30pm on UBC campus. Field trip dates and times vary.
Final Project
At the end of the program students are required to complete a final project on a scientific topic of their choice. Some students require help choosing a topic, researching the topic, and preparing the project. Volunteers are available to help the students both inside and outside of class.
Outside the Classroom
Volunteers assist students with non-academic issues. Volunteers must take the time to get to know the students so they can address their needs. Students may require help setting up an email account or using their UBC library card. Volunteers should also make the effort to explore with the students the many attractions and services UBC has to offer including the aquatic centre, libraries, gardens, and free talks.
Time Commitment & Requirements
Volunteers must commit for 3 months, from May to the first week of August. It is expected that volunteers will attend one activity per week, either a lecture or field trip. Attending a lecture includes a social gathering from 5 to 6pm prior to the lecture. Field trips are throughout Vancouver and dates and times vary. Volunteers should be mature and reliable. Experience working with diverse populations is an asset. Taking initiative and working independently is particularly important.
